Camping Propane Cylinder

When one goes on a camping trip, it would be useful to have a camping propane cylinder since you would be able to cook some tasty food and would not miss home food too much – of course, this would mean lugging around some extra weight but if you are a foodie, it helps for sure.

Here again, since this is a heating equipment, one needs to take sufficient precautions, else the consequences could be disastrous. If you make the right choice, a propane camping cylinder can prove to be very useful.

One of the first things which you need to do is to check is the heater which you are planning to purchase has an accreditation from an approved standardization agency – once you have identified such a heater, you can rest assured that the manufacturer is scrupulously adhering to the standards laid down by that standardization organization. No doubt, this heater may be a little more expensive but that should not worry too much since after all you will be paying a little extra for some peace of mind and safety – even the manufacturers would have invested a little more in their quality control procedures so they should be entitled to recover their costs.

Please make sure that you read the users manual carefully and adhere to all the instructions which are laid down. Please do not attempt to take some short cuts since that could be dangerous. Similarly, if there is a problem with the propane cylinder, please take it to an authorized service center so that it is repaired well and the same defect should not materialize again quickly.

It would be prudent to check your propane cylinder carefully before using or before bringing it to your camping site. You should also try to ascertain if there are any leaks. Please keep in mind that since propane is a colorless gas, you need to try to detect any leakages by odor. The smell of propane is akin to that of rotten eggs, so it should not be too difficult to detect that smell. The other way would be to apply some soapy water around the cylinder - if there are leakages, then you should be able to see bubbling in the water – actually, this method would be a good one to detect most form of gas leakages, not only propane.

It is essential that you keep sufficient space around the cylinder since there should be sufficient ventilation. Please keep in mind that however good, the cylinder may be good, there will be some generation of carbon monoxide since that will be an inevitable by product of the combustion of propane and if there is a lot of accumulation inside your tent without space for the carbon monoxide to go out and have ingress of fresh air, the consequences can be fatal - you will not realize the danger, since you may be fast asleep at that time.
